With the completion of a $154 million fundraising campaign and implementation of a new strategic plan, Butler University, which combines liberal arts and professional studies in a thriving urban setting, is poised to strengthen its position as a leading masters comprehensive university. We invite nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs , is the principal academic and administrative leader of the college, and oversees fourteen departments comprised of 150 full-time faculty, as well as allied academic programs and their staffs.
Responsibilities and Desired Characteristics
The Dean must be a leader who will guide the academic direction of our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which enjoys an established and growing reputation for academic excellence. Responsibilities include maintaining and strengthening the quality of programs and faculty, and working with the provost and deans of the other Butler colleges to help fulfill the university s educational mission. The university is seeking candidates who will:
* Support and promote the excellence of faculty in teaching, service and scholarship * Champion and promote the Liberal Arts tradition to diverse constituencies, both on and off campus * Model servant leadership, equanimity, geniality, composure, and self-possession * Address challenges creatively and innovatively * Listen and communicate effectively * Value pedagogical innovation and support diverse educational opportunities (e.g. study abroad) * Lead collaboratively and promote a culture of transparency and openness * Cultivate strategies to attract, develop, and retain talented and diverse students, faculty and staff * Identify and obtain external funding and support for institutional initiatives * Maintain cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with local, regional, national, and international constituencies, as well as with other groups within the university. Expected credentials are: A terminal degree in any of the disciplines in the college A record of excellence in teaching and scholarship Significant administrative experience, including responsibility for budgeting, program/curricular development, and personnel/facilities management.
